Editing of shots

In the editing phase, we will be focusing on having fast, quick-paced shots. The reasons for this being that it follows suit with the music of this genre (metalcore), and it will enable us to create a sense of urgency within the video, helping it to comply with the lyrics.

Composition of shot's

For the composition of the video, we believe that it would look most striking and relevant to have the video in a black and white style. However, during the editing stage we will evaluate how this looks, and if it is suitable to our video. If it is not, we always have the option to keep the colour, or to fade the contrast of the video.

Take a look at this video by metalcore band The Architects, which features a low contrast in their shots for the video.

The editing of this video is also very important to consider. All of the edits are no longer than 2-3 seconds, creating a fast paced, relentless video. Seeing as the music of our band Fear The Unknown is similar in style to this, it is important to consider having our editing style similar to this.

Phase's of shots

These are the proposed rough shots of the intro to the Watchtower. These are subject to change, and are only being used as a draft.

The introduction lasts for 1:01, and will feature numerous shots of the whole band, and single musicians.

·        First phase - whole shot of band
·        Second phase - close-up shots of individual faces of band members
·        Third phase - throughout intro mostly shots of main guitarists
·        Fourth phase - shot of drummer
·        Five - mix between phases 3-4
·        Six - shot of main singer

Performance/Narrative based video

When reviewing videos for Metalcore bands, it has been evident that there is a great mixture between videos that feature performance and narrative videos. After discussions with my group, and Fear The Unknown, it has been agreed that the best way to go is to have a performance based video of the band performing Watchtower. This would enable us to concentrate on the bands profile - a common theme for upcoming unsigned bands. It would also be the best way in which to conduct a video with our resources.

Fear The Unknown Profile

·        Fear The Unknown is an unsigned metalcore band, consisting of 5 members.
·        Their hometown is Norwich.
·        They have played multiple gigs around this area, including the venue at the Brickmakers.
·        They initially formed a few years ago, and have gotten stronger ever since, growing in popularity.

BRING ME THE HORIZON - It Never Ends

I have chosen this song by BRING ME THE HORIZON because i believe that the lyrics and style of music is closely linked to Fear The Unknown. With a video like this being so closely linked to the music that will be featured in our video, it is evident that as a group we can tale pointers from the way the video was shot and edited.

Lyrics:

I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs, and I've got to keep it, I know something u don't know. OH!
It sits in silence
Eats away at me
It feeds like cancer
This guilt could fill a fucking sea
Pulling teeth, wolves at my door
Now falling and failing is all I know
This disease is getting worse
I counted my blessings, now I'll count this curse
The only thing I realy know... I can't sleep at night
I am buried and breathing in regret YEAAAA!
The only thing I realy know... I can't sleep at night
I am buried and breathing in regret
I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs, and I've got to keep it, I know something u don't know.
I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs, and I've got to keep it, I know something u don't know.
I may look happy, but honestly dear
The only way I'll realy smile, is if you cut me ear to ear
I see the vultures, they watch me bleed
They lick their lips, as all the shame spills out of me
Repent Repent! the end is nigh,
Repent Repent! were all going to die
Repent Repent! These secrets will kill us
So get on your knee's and pray for...
Repent Repent! the end is nigh,
Repent Repent! were all going to die
Repent Repent! These secrets will kill us
So get on your knee's
And pray for forgiveness
We all carry these things
Inside that no one else can see
They hold us down like anchors
They drown us out at sea
I look up to the sky
There may be nothing there to see
But if I don't believe in him
Why would he believe in me?
Why would he believe in me?
Why would he believe in me?
Why would he believe in me?
Why would he believe in me?
I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs, and I've got to keep it, I know something u don't know.
I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs, and I've got to keep it,
I know something you will never know
You will never know
I know something you don't know

The feature for this video that I have noted is the use of the artists within the video, to help highlight and profile themselves, and increase awareness of who they are. This has now given me strong evidence that i should be using the artists within my video, to highlight their growing profile.

Watchtower

The Watch Tower

Verse 1

I’m sick of myself, blood drips down my foundations
I have to watch their bodies fold, under the pressure
A shattered spine a broken skull, the least of my expectations
IfI had a pound for each one id be made of gold, of f'ing gold

Pre chorus 1

The elevator goes up, but only bodies fall down
They’re falling off of my head, and losing theirs on the ground

Chorus

I am, I am the watch tower
I watch, but I only watch them die
The irony is that I’m suicidal
ButI can't jump off myself

Verse 2

I’m sick of plain corpses crash and burn, no face no recognition
Just empty eyes and clotted blood, with no expression
From new born child to rotting man, to just conceived make the incision
Sign here to have your name engraved in bold, in f'ing bold

Pre chorus 2

The elevator goes up but only bodies fall down
They’re falling off of my head, and losing theirs on the ground

Chorus (as previous)

Bridge

This is: manslaughter, mass murder
You’re not a f’ing martyr
Constrain you, I’d brain you
But I don’t have limbs and neither
Will you when you hit the floor
Fake gods won’t save you anymore

Outro Chorus (as previous)

Analysis of the lyrics will follow in a later post!

Location

We have decided on the type of location that we would ideally like to use for our shoot, this being an indoor, open space. Our search as of this moment is on-going, and we will keep you updated on any progress.

The reason for this being that we believe having a closed, in-door space will help to profile the bands appearance (important for unsigned bands), and it should also help in the sound of the music. Also, logistically with all of our equipment and the bands instruments, it would prove safer and easier. In a later post I have stated I am going to use a performance based video.

Many videos have influenced our decision in this process, one such video is shown above.

Unsigned band - Fear The Unknown

We have decided on our band for our coursework, and we have chosen to use an unsigned band, by the name of Fear the Unknown. They are a metal core band, and within this we have chosen their song 'Watchtower'.

In response to the below post, I have answered the questions put forward in a newer post.

Digipak - The Naked and Famous

When reviewing the digipak for the Naked and Famous' album 'Passive me, Aggressive you', which featured the song I analysed earlier, I could not find any pictures of the digipak 'laid-out', however I was able to see that it features a fairly unique method, in that the shape of the digipak is circular.

Digipak - Coldplay

After trying to find the digipak for a coldplay album, I stumbled across this picture:

http://www.slideshare.net/tamz486/analysis-of-digipaks-8455615 - It should be the second slide!

I am sorry for the hyperlink but i could not upload, or transfer the picture on to blogger.

Digipaks

Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipacks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and one to the left, with the CD in the center portion. Usually, the portion of the digipack that hold the CD is made of plastic like a traditional jewel case CD - the plastic part is simply attached to the paper background. however, it is important to note that digipaks can have more than three parts, infact they can have as many  (within reason) that the band/artist seem fit.

The Naked and Famous - Young Blood: Textual Analysis

Directed by
Joel Kefali and Campbell Hooper

Overview of the video:

The video depicts various ‘youths’ (not members of the band) breaking boundaries and having fun. In parts the video is high octane and full of energy, and in others the video can become more sedentary, connotations of the assumptions of today’s youth.

Genre characteristics – the characteristics of this type of genre (synth-pop/electronic) is that of an upbeat, artificial, eerie sound, that is provoking emotionally.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals – lyrics constantly say ‘we’re all young and naive still, this ties in with the visuals with the actors peering over bridges from atop objects and jumping on cars. “trying to find the in-between” can also tie in with the opposite parts of the video of highly active then passive moments.

Relationship between music and visuals – the music and visuals tie in very well for this video. As stated beforehand there are moments of passive and active behaviour within the video. When the visuals are showing active movement the music is energetic – take the moment between 3:05 and 3:20 for example. And then examples of the music changing to a slower, more laid back extent are when the visuals have become more sedentary – such as 2:35 to 2:55.

Close ups of artist - there are no close ups of the artist as they are not featured in the video.

Performance based or narrative based – narrative based, although the video is striking, it is the lyrics and music that captivates the audience.

We're all young and naive still
We require certain skill
The motive changes like the wind
Hard to control when it begins

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-between
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Can't help myself but count the flaws
Claw my way out through these walls
One temporary escape
Feel it start to permeate

We lie beneath the stars at night
Our hands gripping each other tight
You keep my secrets hope to die
Promises, swear them to the sky

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-between
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

As it withers
Brittle it shakes
Can you whisper
As it crumbles and breaks
As you shiver
Count up all your mistakes
Pair of forgivers
Let go before it's too late
Can you whisper
Can you whisper
Can you whisper
Can you whisper

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-between
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-between
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
